Why this status applies
A Gypsy Fiddler (1933) is a US short film released as part of the Treasure Chest series. Under the Copyright Act of 1909, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a renewal filing in the 28th year of their first copyright term to maintain protection. If no renewal was filed, the work entered the public domain at the end of its first 28-year term.
A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) reveals no renewal registration for this title. While most major studio features from Fox were renewed, many of the short subjects produced by Educational Pictures and distributed by Fox during this period were allowed to lapse. Because the 28-year term expired in 1961 without a renewal being recorded, the film fell into the public domain in the United States.
