A Soapy Opera is an animated short from the Terrytoons 'Heckle and Jeckle' series. It was originally registered for copyright by Terrytoons, Inc., on September 25, 1953, under registration number LP2906. As a 1953 production, its initial 28-year copyright term was scheduled to expire at the end of 1981. For the work to remain protected, a renewal registration had to be filed with the US Copyright Office during the 28th year of the first term (1981). A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries for the years 1980 through 1982 confirms that no renewal was ever filed for this specific title. While many Terrytoons were later acquired by Viacom/Paramount and maintained, several shorts from the early 1950s missed their renewal windows due to administrative oversights during the transfer of rights. Without a timely renewal, the film entered the public domain in the United States on January 1, 1982.
