Under the Copyright Act of 1909, works registered between 1928 and 1963 required a manual renewal filing with the US Copyright Office during their 28th year to extend protection to a second term. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) reveals no renewal record for this specific title. While Paramount renewed the majority of their feature films and many later shorts, a significant number of their 1930s Fleischer cartoons were allowed to lapse into the public domain. Because no renewal was filed within the statutory window (roughly 1965–1966 for a 1938 release), the copyright expired at the end of its first 28-year term. The film's public domain status is further corroborated by its widespread presence in PD cartoon anthologies from distributors such as Alpha Video and Mill Creek Entertainment, and its availability on the Internet Archive without copyright challenges from the successor rightsholder (Viacom/Paramount).
