Arch of Triumph - Trailer

The motion picture 'Arch of Triumph', starring Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer, was registered for copyright by Enterprise Productions, Inc. on April 20, 1948 (LP1626). Under the Copyright Act of 1909, works registered between 1928 and 1963 required a manual renewal filing with the US Copyright Office during the 28th year of the first term to maintain protection. While the feature film itself was renewed in 1975 (R613349) and remains protected, trailers from this era were frequently treated as separate entities for copyright purposes or were published without their own individual copyright notices. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) reveals no separate renewal registration for the trailer of 'Arch of Triumph'. Furthermore, most trailers of the 1940s lacked a dedicated copyright notice on the film strip itself, a defect that placed them in the public domain upon publication under the laws of that time. Because the underlying film was renewed but the promotional trailer was not independently renewed (nor did it usually carry its own notice), the trailer is widely recognized as public domain in the US and is frequently included in public domain trailer compilations without legal challenge.
