Why this status applies

Under the 1909 Copyright Act, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a manual renewal filing with the U.S. Copyright Office during the 28th year of their first copyright term to remain protected. 'Battle of Blood Island' was released in May 1960 by Roger Corman's Filmgroup and was originally registered for copyright on July 25, 1960, under registration number LP17103. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) indicates that no renewal was filed in 1987 or 1988 (the required window for a 1960 registration). Consequently, the film's copyright expired at the end of its first 28-year term on December 31, 1988. The film is widely recognized as being in the public domain and is frequently featured in public domain DVD collections and on the Internet Archive without restriction.
