Chained for Life

Under the Copyright Act of 1909, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a copyright renewal filing during the 28th year of their first term to maintain protection. Based on searches of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE), no renewal record exists for 'Chained for Life'. The film was originally registered by Classic Pictures, Inc. on March 1, 1951, with registration number LP747. To remain protected, the copyright would have needed to be renewed in 1978 or 1979. Because no such renewal was filed, the work entered the public domain at the expiration of its first 28-year term. The film is widely recognized as public domain by film historians and is frequently distributed by public domain specialty labels such as Alpha Video and Something Weird Video. It is also available for unrestricted download on the Internet Archive.
