Under the current United States copyright law, all works published or registered before January 1, 1929, have entered the public domain. This film, 'Convict 13', was released on October 27, 1920, and originally registered for copyright by the Comique Film Corp. on the same day (registration number LP15730). Because the film was published more than 95 years ago (specifically, before the 1929 cutoff), any existing copyright has expired. No renewal search is necessary because the term of protection for works from 1920 reached its legal maximum regardless of whether a renewal was filed. The film is now freely available for use, distribution, and adaptation in the United States.
