Cop Hater

The film 'Cop Hater' was released in 1958 and was a US production directed by William Berke. Under the US Copyright Act of 1909, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a copyright renewal filing during the 28th year of their first term to maintain protection. Failure to renew result in the work entering the public domain. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) reveals no renewal registration for 'Cop Hater'. The original registration (LP12140) was filed by Barbizon Productions, Corp. on September 15, 1958. However, no renewal was filed in 1985 or 1986. Because the renewal was a mandatory requirement for works of this vintage and was not fulfilled, the film expired into the public domain on January 1, 1987. This status is corroborated by the film’s inclusion in various public domain film collections and its presence on the Internet Archive without takedowns from a rights-holder.
