Fear in the Night
1947 · Pine-Thomas Productions / Paramount Pictures · Dir. Maxwell Shane
The dream is unusually vivid: Bank employee Vince Grayson finds himself murdering a man in a sinister octagonal-shaped room lined with mirrors while a mysterious woman breaks into a safe. It is so vivid that Vince suspects it may have really happened. To get the dream off his mind, he goes on a picnic with some relatives. When a thunderstorm forces his party into a nearby mansion, Vince discovers that the bizarre room does exist, and it means nothing but trouble.

Why this status applies
Fear in the Night (1947), directed by Maxwell Shane, was originally registered for copyright by Paramount Pictures on February 17, 1947, under the registration number LP901. Under the laws governing works published between 1928 and 1963, a copyright registration had to be renewed during its 28th year to extend protection for a second term. For this film, the renewal window opened in 1974 and closed in 1975.
A thorough search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database, the U Penn online Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE), and David Pierce's 'Motion Picture Copyrights and Renewals 1950-1959' confirms that no renewal was ever filed for this title. Consequently, the film fell into the public domain upon the expiration of its first 28-year term on February 17, 1975. This is further corroborated by its ubiquitous presence in public domain DVD collections from labels like Alpha Video and Mill Creek, as well as its availability for unrestricted download on the Internet Archive and legal streaming on public domain platforms.
