Go for Broke!

1951 · Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) · Dir. Robert Pirosh

A tribute to the U.S. 442nd Regimental Combat Team, formed in 1943 by Presidential permission with Japanese-American volunteers. We follow the training of a platoon under the rueful command of Lt. Mike Grayson who shares common prejudices of the time. The 442nd serve in Italy, then France, distinguishing themselves in skirmishes and battles; gradually and naturally, Grayson's prejudices evaporate with dawning realization that his men are better soldiers than he is.

Why this status applies

Under the Copyright Act of 1909, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a renewal filing with the US Copyright Office during their 28th year of protection to avoid entering the public domain. 'Go for Broke!' was originally registered for copyright by Loew's Inc. (the parent company of MGM) on March 26, 1951, under registration number LP885. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress records confirms that the copyright was successfully renewed by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc. on December 1, 1978, under renewal number RE0000010078. Because the renewal was filed within the statutory window, the film's copyright was extended for a second term. Under the 1976 Copyright Act and subsequent extensions (such as the Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act), films from 1951 that were properly renewed are protected for a total of 95 years from their publication date. Therefore, the film will not enter the public domain until January 1, 2047.
