Why this status applies
The film 'Helen of Troy' released in 1924 is a US production. Under current United States copyright law, all works published or registered before January 1, 1928, have entered the public domain due to the expiration of their copyright term.
Since this film was released in 1924, any copyright protection it once held expired no later than 95 years after publication (2019), or even earlier if the copyright was never renewed during the 28th year of its initial term. Because it predates the 1928 cutoff, it is definitively in the public domain regardless of renewal status.
