For a 1946 release, the renewal window occurred in 1974. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) reveals that MGM failed to file a renewal for this specific entry in the Hardy Family series. While most MGM features of this era were renewed, 'Love Laughs at Andy Hardy' is a well-documented exception. Because the copyright was not renewed to the second 28-year term, the work lapsed into the public domain in the United States in 1974. The film's public domain status is further corroborated by its inclusion in numerous public domain DVD collections (such as those from Alpha Video and Mill Creek) and its presence on the Internet Archive without takedowns from Warner Bros. (the successor to MGM's pre-1986 library).
