Monkey on My Back

1957 · Imperial Productions · Dir. André de Toth

The painfully true story of welterweight boxing champion Barney Ross is detailed in Monkey on My Back. Cameron Mitchell stars as Ross, whose meteoric ring career is interrupted when he joins the Marines at the outset of WWII. A highly decorated hero, Ross contracts malaria oversees and is given morphine to assuage the pain. By the time he returns to the states, Ross is a confirmed drug addict. Before he can rise to the top again, he must hit rock bottom and his descent into the hell of narcotics dependency is graphically illustrated (so much so that the film was almost denied a Production Code seal). Though a cured Barney Ross served as technical advisor for Monkey on My Back, he ended up suing the producers for defamation of character -- and lost.

Why this status applies

Under the 1909 Copyright Act, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a renewal filing in the 28th year to maintain protection. 'Monkey on My Back' was registered for copyright by Imperial Productions, Inc. on May 14, 1957 (LP8363). A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) confirms the copyright was successfully renewed. The renewal was filed on June 18, 1985 (RE248742) by Edward Small Productions, Inc., as the proprietor of copyright in a work made for hire. This renewal extended the protection for a second term of 67 years, meaning the film remains under copyright in the United States until 95 years after its publication date, expiring on December 31, 2052.
