Police

The film 'Police', starring Charlie Chaplin and released by the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company, was published in the United States in May 1916. Under current United States copyright law, specifically the provisions regarding works published before 1928, all such works have entered the public domain regardless of whether they were originally registered or renewed. Works published prior to January 1, 1928, saw their maximum possible 95-year term of protection expire by 2023 at the latest. As a 1916 release, the copyright for 'Police' expired exactly 75 years after its publication under the 1909 Act (if properly renewed) or 28 years after publication (if not renewed). Under the 1998 Copyright Term Extension Act, it would have moved into the public domain no later than January 1, 1992. It is currently widely available in the public domain and featured in numerous archival collections such as the Internet Archive and the Library of Congress.
