Why this status applies

The 1928 version of 'Ramona', directed by Edwin Carewe and starring Dolores del Río, is the most prominent film of this title released within the early talkie transition period. As a US production released in 1928, it was subject to a 28-year initial copyright term, requiring a renewal in the 28th year to extend protection to the full 95-year term. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries (Motion Pictures 1912–1939 and 1950–1959) shows no record of a renewal filing for this work by United Artists or Inspiration Pictures. Under the Copyright Act of 1909, failure to renew during the 28th year (circa 1955-1956) resulted in the work entering the public domain. While there are earlier versions (1910, 1916) which are also public domain due to age, and a later 1936 version, the 1928 production is the most historically significant. Note that the 1936 version was renewed (RE0000192451) and remains protected until 95 years after its release.
