Sallie Gardner at a Gallop

This short series of chronophotographic images is one of the earliest examples of motion pictures. Produced by Eadweard Muybridge in 1878 at the request of Leland Stanford, it predates the 1928 threshold for public domain in the United States by 50 years. Under US copyright law, all works published prior to January 1, 1928, have entered the public domain. As a production from 1878, its copyright term expired decades ago based on both the 1909 and 1976 Copyright Acts. No renewal or restoration applies to a US work of this age.
