Why this status applies

The film 'The Ghost of the Canyon' was released in 1920, starring Helen Gibson as a railroad operator in an adventure-themed western. This identification matches the user hint perfectly. Under US copyright law, any work published before January 1, 1928, is definitively in the public domain. Because this motion picture was published in 1920, its term of copyright has expired regardless of whether it was registered or renewed. It entered the public domain at the latest on January 1, 1996, following the expiration of its maximum 75-year term under the 1976 Act (which was further extended for later works, but not those already in the public domain).
