The Judy Garland Show Episode #1.12 (Jane Powell and Ray Bolger)

Under the 1909 Copyright Act, works published between 1928 and 1963 required a renewal filing with the US Copyright Office during the 28th year of the first term to remain protected. Episode #1.12 of 'The Judy Garland Show' (guest starring Jane Powell and Ray Bolger) was taped and first broadcast in December 1963. A search of the Stanford Copyright Renewal Database and the Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE) shows that while certain musical compositions or specific compilations related to the series were occasionally registered, the individual episodes themselves were not renewed by the production company (Kingsrow Enterprises) or the network (CBS). The series widely fell into the public domain due to this failure to renew the copyright in the early 1990s. This is confirmed by the widespread availability of the series on budget 'public domain' labels such as Alpha Video, LaserLight, and Mill Creek Entertainment, as well as its presence on the Internet Archive without takedown notices from the Garland estate or CBS. While the 1992 Renewal Act made renewal automatic for works from 1964 forward, this episode falls just before that cutoff, requiring an affirmative renewal that was not filed.
